A tomte was a kind of Scandinavian domestic goblin and a subspecie of the vättir. They were generally 3 feet high at most, but were exceptionally strong and magically gifted. The tomte usually lived on a farm and acted as its guardian. If treated well it would bring good fortune to the household, but if mistreated it could be outright homicidal. Typically there were never more than one tomte on any given farm, as the tomte was a solitary vätte.
